Cut Flowers for the Garden

Now that summer is in full swing and gardens are blooming everywhere it’s a great time to be able to bring some of the outdoors in to get maximum use out of your garden. A small posey can brighten up anyone’s day or room!

Not all cut flowers have to be annuals, its even better if they aren’t as then you get to make use of them year after year. Alchemilla mollis is a great foil for other flowers with its acid green soft flower heads and a staple in many peoples gardens.

A simple bunch of Hydrangea heads in a lovely glass jar looks incredibly striking. Even once the flowers have gone over they still pack a punch in the house as a dried arrangement.

Other good perennial stalwarts are

  • Astrantia
  • Peony
  • Euphorbia
  • Roses

Annuals make for particularly good cut flowers as they flower continuously if deadheaded until the last frosts. Their sole aim in life is to set seed and by cutting the flowers you are preventing this. Cosmos and sweet peas are a couple of great options for annual cut flowers.

Other annuals to consider are

  • Cerinthe
  • Nigella
  • Dahlias

Ornamental grasses I personally feel are not used enough in arrangements. Their flower heads are so striking and just add another dimension to an arrangement.

When we design gardens and carry out the planting plans we always like to factor in picking flowers for the house. It is another way to create an important link between the house and the garden, which is instrumental in all of our designs.
