This is our second easy access garden area for a community allotment design in Lewes. This community allotment is located in an estate in Lewes and provides a valuable resource to the residents. We were invited to design an area of the garden for members of the community with limited mobility. Again, this site is on a slope, but we have made the most of the area, maximising the growing space and increasing access to the site as a whole. Here the clients have the added benefit of use of a large poly-tunnel, increasing the growing season in the garden.

As with our other easy-access allotment, we used Nidagravel, a permeable surface that is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, allowing access to all to the community garden. Timber for raised beds and pergolas was locally sourced and milled sweet chestnut. The raised beds are of different height to allow people with different mobility restrictions to use a bed most suitable for their needs. Beds have been built at wheelchair height, sitting height and also for standing at.

This project received full lottery funding and the build is now complete.
